IT IS HOMEY, EXOTIC – AND HAS THE BEST PEANUT SOUP IN THE WORLD

Soup bars are really something that has been underestimated if you ask me. Yes, actually soups in general. But that is soon about to change. Because just like “juicing” has been the “it”-thing for a couple of years, “souping” is now gonna take over as the new black. In Vesterbro lies a little soup bar, that has picked up on the trend and serves the most tasty vegetarian “soul food”.

The name of the place; The Caribbean Housewife is perfect as it really sums up the spirit of the place.
It truly is a kitchen of a loving and caring housewife. Every single guest who came in while I was there was welcomed and spoken to like they where family members coming home from. At the same time, the bar oozes of exotic smells and creativity. Hence, the Caribbean part.

It is all about wholesome, warm and tasty vegetarian food that will make you feel good.
Jamain, who owns the restaurant, not only develops all of the recipes herself, she also makes all of the food and takes care of her guests.
According to her the secret of good slow fast food is love. Like a housewife cooking for her family, she cares about making food for her guests that will keep them healthy, strong and happy.

The peanut soup is made with 20 different ingredients

Although the “Pick me up pumpkin” soup with buckthorn, pumpkin lumps and roasted seeds was amazingly sweet and very satisfying, the real winner soup for me was the peanut one.

When it came out the smell of peanuts, coriander and chilli instantly filled the entire soup bar. Uhm and the taste! A perfect combination of the creamiest nutty consistency, fresh herbs and warming spices.
Desperate for the secret, I asked about the ingredients, but there were no comments. “It is something totally different from what people think”, was all the Caribbean housewife would reveal. – And, that is has 20 different ingredients…

If you still have a tiny bit of room after that creamy round of satisfaction you should order the plantains! In a genius experimenting manner they combine salty and sweet, and guarantee to satisfy whichever kind of snack craving you might have. Cooked to be fried, crisp and salty and then topped with the sweetest agave syrup and coconut flakes. Oh yes, that works.

A new kind of healthy

At the Caribbean Housewife “healthy” is about more than using nutritious and sugar-free ingredients. It is about how the food makes you feel inside. When you leave you should feel completely satisfied, (not bloated) and full all until the next morning.

It is also about using organic, cruelty-free ingredients. Most of the food is vegan. Yet, not the vegetarian lasagne. It has to work for the dish and the taste – and that is a balance the housewife really understands.

Escape the stress and let go

The tasty vegetarian food at The Caribbean housewife really is slow fast food. The atmosphere, friendly small talk and grandma-inspired interior completely invite you to let go of your stress – and simply enjoy a good homemade meal.

The soup bar is a hybrid of grandma’s cozy kitchen and a hip little restaurant. A hybrid that totally works.
On the walls hangs international art with lots of stories (that Jamain won’t hesitate to tell you about) and slow Latin jazz is playing through the speakers.

If you don’t have time to stick around, The Caribbean Housewife also does take away. Ready to heat up and make you feel good after a cold trip home from work in the harsh winter weather.
The soup bar is open until the 21th March. In the Summer half of the year it turns into an ice cream shop. See, that is smart!
